Autumn on the Olympic Peninsula

Explore Fall in the Pacific Northwest

Enjoy a brisk walk along Rialto Beach.

While COVID-19 is keeping us far away from family and friends, it doesn’t mean we can’t get close to nature. Autumn on the Olympic Peninsula is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors. Olympic National Park is home to several distinct ecosystems, which offers a variety of activities and weather. From rainforests to waterfalls to lakes, there’s plenty to see during your stay.

Autumn Activities in Olympic National Park

While autumn brings cooler temperatures to Olympic National Park, there are still plenty of outdoor activities to pique your interest. With several distinct ecosystems, you can see snow in the high country while the rainforest valleys remain balmy and comfortable.

Stargaze

Settle in for a cool night under the stars along the Olympic Peninsula.

One of the best parts of being outside the city is the ability to look into the night sky and be surrounded by stars. While staying in Olympic National Park, be sure to take time to sit outside in the evening and watch as the multitude of stars sparkle above your head.

Paddle Along the Water

Peaceful paddling along Lake Crescent.

The calm waters of Lake Quinault and Lake Crescent are the perfect places to slowly paddle along with nature. Rent a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard at Lake Crescent through mid-October and hop aboard to enjoy the slow ebb and flow of nature.

Pedal Along the Trail

The Hoh Rainforest looks like it’s straight out of a fairytale.

Bring your own or rent a bike at the Log Cabin Resort through mid-September and get ready to see nature from your own two wheels. Bikes are welcome on the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT), and the 30-mile Rainforest Loop Trail.

Lake Quinault Lodge Hike

If you are staying at Lake Quinault Lodge, you are steps away from 8 miles of beautiful inter-connected trails. Leashed dogs are welcome on some of the trails, so be sure to check ahead of time before bringing your pooch! Check out popular hiking trails here.

Visit Hurricane Ridge

Snow-capped mountains at Hurricane Ridge.

Hurricane Ridge is the starting point for several hiking trails. During the early autumn, you can hike up to Hurricane Hill and on a clear day see to Canada or admire the glacier-clad Mount Olympus. Hurricane Ridge Road is open every day through October and then is open only on weekends. During the colder months, Hurricane Ridge is the gathering place for skiers, snowboarders, and tubers. Before leaving for Hurricane Ridge, always check road conditions with the National Park Service on their twitter account @HRWinterAccess or by calling 360.565.3131.
